It was a cloudless day out at the bay, gathering Kai Moana, sunblock slapped across our faces, wearing bucket hats and enjoying the warm summer sun. The water was clear and glittered like a thousand stars landed on the surface.
As the day got hotter we decided to go out on the waka and go fishing. Liana and I packed the rods into a smallish, white fishing boat and went out to see what Tangaroa was going to gift us with.
After putting my life jacket on I handed Liana a red one. She took one look at it and chucked it on the seat. "Oi put it on" I said throwing the life jacket back at her chest. "Fine" she moaned "but I'm not going to fall in the water."
"You might," I replied, "you are quite clumsy."
"No I'm not, things just get in the way when I'm walking," She said with a smile on her face. I laughed and forced her to put her life jacket on. "You never know, it could save your life" I said and stopped the boat.
"Whoever catches the biggest fish gets $10 from the loser!" Liana yelled from the back of the fishing boat. We got the fishing lines ready and started our competition. Liana got her first bite within seconds, mine took a couple of minutes.
We both pulled out lines up revealing a snapper on the end of each one. My one was only a tiny baby. I grabbed the baby snapper off the the hook with a wet cloth, so I wouldn't ruin it's gills, and gently placed it back in the water because I knew that It wouldn't be over 27cm long.
"That's massive!" I yelled to Liana talking about the snapper she just caught. "It's enough fish to feed the whole tribe!"
"Yeah...but look," she said pointing to the snapper, "I think it's pregnant." She held the body with a wet cloth and tried to pull the hook out of its mouth. "I think your right." I said helping her take the hook out of its mouth. We eventually got it out and put the Orange snapper back in the water. After a few moments of silence Liana finally said, "what if the fish was lying!"
"What?" I asked.
"I mean, what if the snapper wasn't actually pregnant. It could've been breathing out to make it look like it was, but the truth is... She just didn't want to be dinner!"
"Oh my gosh your right!" I said sarcastically and laughed. We both drank a can of lemonade and then agreed to go back to the shore.
We got off the boat just as the sun started to set. We stood on the golden sand and Liana just looked at me. "What?" I asked.
"I believe I caught the biggest fish." She replied with a smile on her face.
"You can buy the fish and chips." I said handing her the $10 note.
